Blue Quandong (Elaeocarpus grandis) is a spectacular sub-tropical rainforest tree (reaching up to 35 metres), highly prized for its bright blue fruit (seed and flesh), attractive flowers and beautiful wood.
First Nations Australians ate the fruit raw or buried unripe fruit in sand for four days making it sweet and more palatable. It was also made into an edible paste by squashing ripe fruit into a bark trough filled with water.
Early settlers used the fruit for jams, pies and pickles. The timber was used to make racing sculls and oars, cabinet and used for interior construction.
