A sleep inducing tea, perfect for our hectic lifestyles

Jilungin is the leaves, bark, and stem of the Winged Nut Tree (Terminalia canescens) commonly found on the Dampier Peninsula in Western Australia as well as the Northern Territory areas of Adelaide River and Litchfield. A small semi-deciduous tree (up to 10 metres) with cream/white flowers, silver grey foliage and winged fruits, it is tolerant of a variety of habitats including open woodlands and skeletal soils.

Traditionally used by the Nyul Nyul people of the Kimberley region to make a herbal tea for consumption in the evening. Used as a digestive tonic and to aid relaxation and deep sleep. Prepared by steeping the dried leaves, stems, and bark in boiling water. The tree also produces an edible sweet gum.

Harvested after the wet season and dried in the sun, the leaf assists in digestion, relaxation and deep sleep. It has a mild earthy taste & smell with antioxidant levels similar to Green Tea. Characterised by its unique aroma and flavour profile, resembling green and black teas with notes of grass, floral, woody and seaweed undertones as well as a distinct astringent, fresh menthol aftertaste.

Add 1 heaped teaspoon to 500ml of boiling water in a teapot or infuser

Steep for 10-15 minutes.

Enjoy hot or chilled as a refreshing iced tea

In order to grow your own you will need to emulate its favourite conditions by providing it with full sun, well-drained sandy or stony soil, and protection from frost, especially in cooler climates. Water regularly during establishment, but avoid overwatering. Harvesting of the leaves for traditional tea is typically done during the dry season (May to September).
