Native Thyme is a strongly aromatic bush native to south east New South Wales, eastern Victoria and Tasmania. Also known as Native Sage it was used by Indigenous Australians for its medicinal properties.

This plant is related to the Westringia and naturally occurs in cool moist gullies, particularly along river banks. It is now a very popular garden plant and can even be used as a low hedge.

  • Digestive Aid: Native thyme is traditionally used to help with indigestion, gas, and bloating.
  • Respiratory Support: Its aromatic compounds, similar to menthol and eucalyptus, may help ease respiratory discomfort and promote clearer breathing, making it useful for coughs, colds, and congestion.
  • Antimicrobial Activity: Some studies suggest that native thyme possesses antimicrobial properties, potentially helping the body fight against certain bacteria and fungi.
  • Antioxidant Properties: The herb is rich in antioxidants, which can help protect cells from damage and support overall health.
  • Skin Conditions: Native thyme has been traditionally used to treat skin disorders.
  • Other Uses: It’s also been traditionally used to address sore throats, bronchitis, upset stomachs, parasitic worm infections, and bedwetting.
  • Preparation: Native thyme can be used to make herbal teas, added to food for flavour, or applied topically as a poultice or infused oil.

When used in dishes featuring chicken, turkey, pork or lamb, a small amount makes a big difference
