Quandong have been an important traditional aboriginal fruit, which is, although somewhat tart, highly nutritious and contains twice the vitamin C of an orange.

The kernel is also very nutritious but indigenous Australians tended to use this mainly for medicinal purposes.

Quandong, also known as native peach, possesses various medicinal properties, traditionally used by Aboriginal Australians and increasingly recognized for its health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, offering potential benefits for skin health, inflammation, and overall well-being.

Here’s a more detailed look at the medicinal properties of quandong:

Antioxidant Properties:

  • Quandong is a rich source of Vitamin C and Vitamin E, which are powerful antioxidants.
  • These antioxidants help protect the body against damage from free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
  • They also play a role in maintaining healthy skin, protecting it from environmental damage.

Anti-inflammatory Properties:

  • The antioxidants in quandong, particularly rutin, have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • This may help in reducing inflammation throughout the body and alleviating symptoms of inflammatory conditions.
  • Some traditional uses of quandong include using crushed leaves mixed with saliva as a topical ointment for skin sores and boils.

Other Potential Benefits:

  • Skin Health: Quandong is believed to be beneficial for skin health due to its high vitamin C and antioxidant content. It may help with collagen production, reduce the appearance of dark circles, and promote skin vitality.
  • Immune System Support: The vitamins and minerals in quandong, particularly Vitamin C, contribute to a healthy immune system.
  • Digestive Health: Quandong kibble is a good source of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion and gut health.
  • Traditional Uses: Aboriginal Australians have traditionally used quandong for various purposes, including treating toothaches, as a purgative (using a tea made from the fruit), and as a remedy for rheumatism (using a ground-down root infusion).
